Although I've been working throughout my illness - apart from a few weeks around the time of surgery - it's all been done from home, via a computer. Today is going to be a real test of my new-found fitness, since it's the first time that I've spent a day in a face-to-face work situation, albeit that this is voluntary work.
This morning, I shall be working in the local Abbey church, guiding visitors, telling them about the history of the building and directing them to cafés in the area, since the Abbey only has a café two days a week in summer, and, generally, coach parties are desperate for a cup of tea/coffee by the time they arrive!
In the afternoon, I'll be in the medieval gaol, working my way through the wonderful archive material that's currently being sorted out and catalogued. I've asked to work on two areas: a) the folklore material and b) transcribing local history audio-recordings.
I already know I'm much better than I was the last time I did Abbey guiding; then, it was a huge effort to get ready to go to the Abbey and deal with the public. This morning, I'm really looking forward to the experience, and not just because I haven't done it for such a long time.
So, by this evening, I shall know how fit I really am, since I'll be engaged not only physically - as when I'm gardening and walking - but also mentally.
This will be an interesting day...
