I'm one of those irritating people who don't stay up to see the New Year in and who, consequently, can get up at the crack of dawn and sniff righteously about "lazy slugabeds" when they look out of the window and see no sign of life!
And that is precisely what I did today - for the first time in several years. Since around 1988, my usual routine has been to go to bed before midnight, growling about the noise of others' celebrations (having turned down invitations to join them) and then, in the morning, to be too tired to get up at a sensible time anyway. By 2005, getting out of bed at all was a major effort and I can't even remember 2006!
Last year, things were improving. I was home from hospital - despite having no help at home other than the goodwill of my very kind neighbours - and, though tired, feeling more optimistic than I had done in a long time.
This year, I got up at 07:00, full of the joys of a new year. Next I looked outside and made the "slugabeds" comment to the dogs - and then I saw the rain and revised my plans for an early morning walk when it was light enough to see where I was going. Instead, I fed the dogs, got breakfast and contemplated the fact that my fridge seems to have broken down for the third time in six months - this may explain why I seem to have had a mild case of food poisoning today.
The rain has slowed down to a simpering drizzle now, so the New Year Walk is about to commence. Food poisoning or no food poisoning, it's time to walk off the old year and move into the new year, embracing the energy that it brings.
Welcome to 2008!
