Being on the receiving end

I may have said this before, but I think it bears repeating. You know how it is when someone tells you something awful's happened to them - perhaps an accident, an illness, something like that? The instant reaction is to feel desperately sorry for them. The next is to be very grateful that it isn't you.

It occurs to me that I'm now that friend to whom something awful has happened - and I know you're sorry for me - but I also know you're glad it's me not you. Nothing to be ashamed of - we all do it - so, don't worry that I might realise and think less of you; I won't (think less of you).
