Three years ago tomorrow I went for my first radiotherapy session. In fact, it was three years ago on 16th February 2007, but it was a Friday, so I reckon three years ago tomorrow. I've been reading my early blog entries and am surprised at how calm I seem to have been. I remember very little of that time - only the driving to and from the hospital on a daily basis, fighting to find a car parking spot and hanging around in the waiting room hoping there wouldn't be a delay; there's nothing more irritating than a half hour drive followed by a two hour wait because the equipment's broken down (again) before a 1 minute treatment.
Well, I've come a long way in three years, as I keep saying. I don't seem to have succumbed (yet) to any of the side-effects of radiotherapy that I was warned about. I said at the time that I didn't want to think about incontinence - apparently fairly common after abdominal radiotherapy. I've been lucky; I haven't had to, though something like 1 in 2 radiotherapy patients experiences serious side effects from treatment. All I can say is let's hope I never have to deal with any of those side-effects, though there's still time for them to appear...
Anyway, I intend to have a happy anniversary tomorrow. It could have been so very much worse.
