Preparing for the landmark birthday

Party preparations are well underway now. My friends and neighbours have been extremely helpful and very kind; I'm incredibly grateful for all the offers of help I've received and am almost looking forward to the event, but it's always a bit of a concern that everything will go as you want on the day.

My big disappointment and sadness though, is that my Finnish 'mother' isn't well enough to join me. She and my Finnish 'father' were hoping to travel to be with me, but it wasn't to be. My thoughts are with her as she goes for her next treatment. And I'm all the keener to raise money to support cancer research. One in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in our lives; I'm one of the lucky ones because I'm ok now. However, more research will help others, and research needs funding. Any little amount I can raise to give others the opportunities that I've had is worth the effort.

I'm currently experiencing the 'bow did that happen' phenomenon when I think of how many birthdays I've had already. This year it's a landmark, not only because I reach my half century (how did that happen??) but also because it's a birthday I really thought I wasn't going to see.

Who knows, I might even manage a few more birthdays now!
