A memorable day

The sun shone, the wind howled and it was freezing cold as we made our way into the chapel at the crematorium. Rays of sunshine came through the window and lit up the coffin. It was a sad event, but it is important to remember those we love and I think this act of remembrance helped everyone there to come to terms with my godfather's death.

Afterwards, there was the 'funeral tea' at the house; ham sandwiches and fruit cake with strong cups of tea and glasses of ginger wine. My godfather would have loved it, and he would have been very proud of his family today. What he would also have loved was the intense political debate that started soon after the tea arrived! A very suitable way to celebrate his life, and one I believe he would thoroughly have approved of.

Watching the effect of illness and death on others makes me increasingly grateful for my own health. It also makes me reflect upon the nature of mortality; how much better to die quickly than to linger and decline. Having begun that decline a couple of years ago - and escaped from it - I know which I'd prefer.
