Never look back?

Since I've been working part time, I've had time on my hands, so to say. As a result, I've been exploring the landscape of my childhood, visiting places with strong memories, where the spirit of place doesn't really change, regardless of the passing of decades.

I wonder if memory becomes stronger when you've had a serious illness? Sometimes, when I go to places I knew so well in my youth, I can almost hear my parents talking, experience events that happened all those years ago. Today, for instance, as I headed towards the seaside, I drove along a road that, many years ago, I'd travelled with one of my godfathers. At that time, that section of road changed from dual to single carriageway. My godfather didn't notice and, today, I could hear my father shouting at him to get out of the way of the oncoming vehicle! I could even hear the screech of rubber as he pulled over. Would that memory have been so vivid if I hadn't had another near-death experience recently? I wonder...
