This entry carries a health-warning to the squeamish; I'm going to describe the side-effects I'm now experiencing after 3.5 weeks of radiotherapy, so if you're easily upset, look away!
This morning, I was talking to someone whose partner is in the last week of treatment and not feeling too good, despite having convinced themselves that they wouldn't suffer side-effects from radiotherapy. It seems that side-effects do have a habit of creeping up on you, and I must admit that although I was determined they wouldn't get me either, today hasn't been easy. It's the first time I've felt unwell, and I think that's probably because I've got more than one side-effect at the same time; cystitis-like symptoms are accompanied by indigestion-like abdominal cramps and a frequent and urgent need to empty my bowel. All very unpleasant and rather undignified.
I'm taking all sorts of remedies now - all prescribed by the medical team (don't try to prescribe for yourself because you're unlikely to be successful and could do something that will have unfortunate consequences). They're all available off prescription and they all work, but I'm sure they probably interact with each other in a way I'd rather not know about, so I'm trying to space them out appropriately throughout the day. This means that at any one point, I'm experiencing a side-effect of some sort while I wait for the medication to treat another to work its way through my system.
However, I'm cheering myself up with the thought that people pay a great deal of money for colonic irrigation and / or enemas and I'm getting the same effect for free!
